What is a design "Mood board"?

If you’re like us (and most mortals), dreamily pinning images to your Pinterest board is almost therapy.

What if we told you it can actually be a crucial step to power up your rebrand?

One of our fave ways to curate a stunning design aesthetic and make our clients’ brand and vibe feel consistent?

MOOD BOARDS.

Our clients find the first stage in our design process - which starts with a humble Pinterest moodboard - SUPER ILLUMINATING for their business’ vision.

What is a moodboard, you say?

Think of a moodboard as a quick sketch (compared to a final masterpiece) to get an idea on the direction of the project.

To kickstart your project, we’ll send you a collection of images, colours and fonts to get a vibe for your project. Nothing is set in stone or final - it's basically a check-in to see if we understood the overall vibe you wanted from our Design Meeting.

It’s all about pinpointing the nitty gritty and the specific details of your brand.

Here’s some advice for reviewing your moodboard:

1. Focus on the overall vibe.

Don’t drill down into detail too much (we can find the perfect shade of fuschia for you later in the process).

2. Give us helpful notes

Record us a Loom and cover the following:

  1. Overall vibe - Is the overall vibe what you had imagined, or if not - are you onboard with this interpretation?

  2. Photography choices - Have the photos we’ve chosen hit the right vibe for your brand? Or do they need tweaks? For example, maybe it feels too MUCH or not ENOUGH… too colourful, too busy, too minimal, too playful, etc.

  3. Colour choices - Is this generally the right palette? Would you like to see more of a certain colour?

  4. Fonts - Do the fonts we’ve selected meet your needs with regard to legibility and vibe?

  5. Symbols, patterns and elements - Are the little extra design pieces we’ve collected something you want to see more or less of?

Remember: your mood board is a visual tool we use to get a “yes - go ahead”. We won’t get everything 100% nailed down in this first stage of the design process, and that’s okay. We’ll refine the details as we go.

You’ll have lots of opportunities to give us feedback on specific design elements so we can get it just right.

This is NOT your brand set in stone forever and ever. It’s just a first step so we can get moving on the real brand work.
